Flat Stitch
Flat stitch — worked with either one or two needles — allows for a wide range of design exploration, including variation in bead sizes, materials, and structural elements such as caribou fur, antler, tassels, handmade pompoms, and more.
Two-needle flat stitch also makes caribou tufting possible. Caribou tufting is the process of trimming bundles of caribou fur into reinforced material to create dimensional texture. This technique was traditionally developed and refined by Dene and Métis Peoples. Because of its complexity, flat stitch is more time-intensive and requires significant skill to master.
Flat stitch also allows for the incorporation of hand-painted birch bark elements — a technique that has become one of La Montagnaise's most recognized and symbolic expressions. These painted birch bark pieces reflect both experimentation and evolution within her work, and have become a signature style of La Montagnaise.
